Mellow yellow plants for your garden

A harbinger of spring, the colour yellow usually has an uplifting and positive effect on people, especially at the end of a cold, dreary winter. Yellow colour schemes may also incite feelings of anxiety in some folks, if not carefully designed. So, how to create a yellow garden utilizing its positive traits? Yellow plants as a single colour scheme greatly enliven the garden, especially when the area is small or shaded, brightening and enlarging the garden space. Yellow gardens also bring warmth to the landscape at those times of the year when the sun’s rays are not at their peak.

Yellow in the garden can be accented by both flowers, foliage or fruit. Here are some mellow yellow stars for the garden:

  • Hemerocallis or Day lily – A spreading rhizomatous perennial with narrow leaves and fragrant, lily-shaped lemon yellow flowers
  • Coreopsis lanceolata or Tickseed – Cheerful and lovely, the sunny blooms of the Tickseed plant are a beautiful addition to a garden. The blooms of this plant are similar to those of the daisy, and are great for cut flower arrangements, for border planting and in cutting gardens.
  • Euryops virginius or Honeybush –  a tall, showy evergreen. Fast growing with many branches, this shrub reaches a height 3.5m and 1.5 wide in a compact form. Its branches are densely covered in small, dark green fan-like leaves. Masses of mini golden daisies bloom from late winter and spring.
  • Senicio tamoides or Canary Creeper – There is nothing more stunning than a sheer drop of masses of golden yellow flowers, and this indigenous creeper literally drips with flowers when in full bloom.
  • Gelsimium sempervirens or Carolina Jasmine – The Trumpet Flower is a light and quick-growing evergreen climber that clings by twining its slender stems around the means of support. Yellow, sweetly-scented, trumpet-shaped flowers that are about 3cm long are borne in clusters from late autumn through winter to early spring.
  • Argyranthemum frutescens or Bush Daisy – Many wonderful hybrids have been bred which vary in size from dwarf, compact varieties to larger growing ones. Hybrids include those that produce single, semi-double and double flowers.
  • Duranta erecta ‘Sheena’s Gold’ or Golden Duranta – An extremely versatile and strikingly conspicuous in the garden. This rewarding shrub is planted throughout the warmer regions of South Africa in a wide and diverse range of garden applications, including hedging and topiaries.
  • Clivia miniata var. citrina or Yellow Clivia – Evergreen perennial with lemon-yellow, trumpet-shaped blooms and strap-shaped leaves. Can be grown in full sun or partial shade with no trouble and grows in a bushy habit.
  • Carex oshimensis ‘Evergold’ or Golden Japanese Sedge – One of the most popular variegated seges. This variety has creamy yellow leaves with dark green edges. They cascade softly to the ground in a fountain like manner.
  • Plectranthus ciliatus ‘Gold’ or Golden Spur Flower – This is a golden cousin of the speckled spurflower. The hybrid is valued for its purple stems and golden-yellow foliage with the odd emerald green and bronze markings.

Whichever plants you choose when designing garden schemes with yellow, discovering the correct combination may be a bit of trial and error but will surely result in an effective and gloriously eye-catching landscape.
