THIS WEEK'S TIP FROM GARDEN GURU SUE BOTH

BRIGHTEN UP YOUR WINTER GARDEN!

BRIGHTEN UP YOUR WINTER GARDEN

April is the time to plant winter-flowering bedding plants to brighten up your garden in the months ahead.

With winter around the corner our thoughts turn to the cold months to come, but gardeners need not despair, there are many beautiful bedding plants that can be put in the garden in April to give it colour throughout the winter. Bedding plants can be used on their own, to provide bold splashes of colour, or planted between the spring-flowering bulbs. Remember to place tall-growing plants at the back of the bed, and low-growing ones at the front.

Here are some suggestions:

For Sunny Areas:

  • Sow some Namaqualand Daisies
  • Plant some Sweet Peas for Scent
  • Grow some Stocks for cut flowers
  • Add some Delphiniums into the mix
  • Pop things up with Iceland Poppies
  • Decorate your borders and pots with Pansies and violas
  • Some daffodil bulbs in your lawn can make a bright spring display
  • Calendulas add some sunny colour

For Shady Spaces:

  • Cyclamens will provide continuous winter colour
  • Foxgloves provide height
  • Sow meadows of primulas
  • Brighten your borders with Primroses

With all these plants available now you will have a bright garden to liven up the cold and dull winter days.
