Solanum melongena or Brinjal or Eggfruit Plant. Most commonly purple, the spongy, absorbent fruit is used in several cuisines. Eggplant is nutritionally low in macronutrient and micronutrient content, but the capability of the fruit to absorb oils and flavours into its flesh through cooking expands its use in the culinary arts.
Brinjals are annuals and needs to be planted in spring in order to harvest the fruit before the frost in winter. Plant in full sun and well drained soil.
