HOLIDAY PLANTS – GARDEN GURU TIPS

Festive Season Gardening

The year is rapidly drawing to an end. Challenges this year took its toll on most of us and many people are looking forward to some well-deserved rest. Some people might be fortunate to go away on holiday and others might spend some time at home with their family and friends. If you are going away on holiday your garden would need some attention before you pack your bags and if you are staying at home your garden would need some attention to make your stay at home more pleasurable. Below are some gardening tips for both the stayers and goers.

For the going away gardener:

  • Weed your garden and cover your beds with mulch to retain moisture while you are away.
  • If you have an automatic irrigation system, make sure that it is fully functional.
  • Clean your gardening tools and pack them away in a secure place.
  • Harvest all fruit and vegetables before you leave – rotting vegetables and fruit can cause secondary disease in your garden.
  • Mow your lawn the day before you leave.
  • Clean your pool.
  • Feed your garden and lawn with a slow release, multipurpose organic fertilizer like Talborne organic 3:1:5

For the staying gardener:

  • Clean your patio and entertainment areas – you will probably spend a lot of time there.
  • Weed your flower beds and dead head your flowering annuals and perennials.
  • Mulch your bed – it gives your garden a neat appearance.
  • Add some colour to your live spruce up your pots with colourful annuals and introduce some colour in you flower beds.
  • Feed your flower beds, pots and lawn.
  • Spend some time to invigorate your lawn – a well-kept lawn is an asset to any garden.
  • Add some festive cheer by decorating your garden or patio. Get the kids to help – this should keep them busy for a while.

This time of year our gardens here in the southern hemisphere are at their best. South Africans enjoy spending time outside and in our gardens during summer. Make your garden an outdoor room where you and your family can relax and enjoy the fruits of your labour during the year.
