Duranta Sapphire Showers

The pretty picotee flowers of this colorful tropical shrub are violet-blue and white.

Golden dewdrop is a vigorous large broadleaf evergreen shrub native to tropical America. The cultivar ‘Sapphire Showers’ has drooping clusters of tubular violet-blue flowers with white edges. These appear when growing conditions are favorable and attract butterflies. Dangling chains of orange-yellow fruits succeed the flowers. The dainty toothed evergreen leaves are rich green and glossy. The branches are spineless and mature plants develop an almost weeping habit when mature.

This shrub does best in well-drained average soil and full to partial sun. In frost-free zones it can be grown as a landscape specimen small tree and in temperate zones with cold winters it is commonly grown as a seasonal bedding plant for containers or mixed borders. It will die back to the ground in regions with mildly frosty winters and rejuvenate each spring. Plant golden dewdrop singly as a specimen plant or massed as a screen. Duranta also works well as a large houseplant, tub specimen or pruned into a small standard tree.
